The U.S. Mission Addis Ababa is seeking an individual for employment in country for the position of Information Assistant/Translator in the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Under the supervision of the Information Specialist, the Information Assistant serves as the translator for the Public Affairs Section of Embassy Addis Ababa with primary responsibility for the translation of official USG documents, speeches, press releases, and reports between English and Amharic. Incumbent is also responsible for media monitoring and managing the Mission’s website.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Applicants must address each required qualification listed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not qualified.
- Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in the Social Sciences, English, Communications or journalism is required.
- Required Experience: A combined minimum of three years of professional experience in media, journalism and/or translation involving English language is required.
- Language Requirement: Level IV (professional translator ability) in English and Amharic (speaking, reading, and writing) is required. English Language proficiency will be tested.
- Skills and Abilities: Must be able to deal effectively and professionally with all levels of persons both inside and outside of the U.S. mission, ranging from VIPs to rural populations. Computer knowledge, such as word processing and e-mail is required; familiarity with social media and the internet is also required.
- Knowledge: Must understand specialized terminology in both English and Amharic related to all topics of interest. Must understand Ethiopian foreign policy and social conditions and have a solid grasp of U.S. society and politics. Must understand diplomatic protocol and be able to understand and interpret nuances in speeches and written texts. Must be cognizant of cultural norms and sensitivities, both Ethiopian and American.

SELECTION PROCESS

2. Current OR employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply. Current OR employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their most recent Employee Performance Report (EPR) are not eligible to apply.
3. Current NOR employees hired on a Family Member Appointment (FMA) or a Personal Service Agreement (PSA) are not eligible to apply within the first 90 calendar days of their employment, unless they have a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
