STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Advanced University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Communications, or other relevant field or a first degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.
Experience: Five or more years of relevant professional work experience in Journalism, International Relations, Communications, or a related field
Language: Excellent command and highly proficient in spoken and written English and working knowledge of French is desirable
DESIRED EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS
Desired skills:
- News and feature writing, photography and video production, and production of innovative audio-visual packages using simple technologies.
Analytical and research skills. - Digital and Social Media expertise
Desired Experience:
Experience in strategic communications and in utilizing specialist communication techniques and tools and producing specialized multi-media packages.
Knowledge of WFP communications channels, tools, and practices.
Experience in managing and leading social media channels and developing appropriate assets

It aims to contribute to Ethiopia’s five-year development agenda, the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), through which the Government combats food insecurity.
ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
This job is found in Gondar. Job holder report to the Head of Security Unit/ Head of Sub Office or designate. At this level job holder is expected to take responsibility for the completion of a range of security-related processes and activities requiring some interpretation of standard guidelines and practices. Job holder is to recommend a course of action on a range of security issues, deal with staff at various levels and may allocate tasks to other colleagues. This job may require to work different shifts and report for duty on short notice.
BACKGROUND AND JOB PURPOSE
- Communications/Advocacy/Resource mobilization is a core function to WFP that supports the programme and influencing agenda of the organisation. WFP’s goal is to End Hunger in the African Continent in partnership with governments, development agencies, donors and the private sector.
- This role will focus targeting audiences both internally across WFP and externally across the African Union, RECs, traditional and digital media, Member States, donor community, humanitarian sector, and the public in general.
- The Officer will be expected to implement the communications plan by supporting and delivering a range of communications activities, providing research and analysis. H/She will also support resource mobilization efforts with partners that share the same vision with WFP for Zero Hunger
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
- Implement AUGO Communication plan, manage the social media channels (Twitter) and contribute to building a strong social media presence for WFP AUGO initiatives through good research, analysis of the assigned area of work, and timely preparation and distribution of communications assets to target audiences to increase the visibility of WFP work and collaboration with the Africa Union. Liaise and interact with WFP staff and external counterparts to support aligned activities and a coherent approach to communications within WFP.
- Collaborate with Communications peers in Regional Bureaus in Nairobi, Dakar, Cairo, and Johannesburg to profile WFP work from all the regions in Africa at the AU; and share information and communication assets from the AU/AUGO with country, regional and global offices of WFP and ensuring the flow of information on opportunities to influence policy, fund-raise and increase the visibility of WFP’s work efforts is bi-directional.
- Draft and disseminate regular updates on the AU policies, frameworks, resolutions, and decisions to share with key WFP internal audiences, including Africa Regional Directors, HQ teams – STR, CAM, Nutrition, and School Feeding among others, to increase understanding of the WFP’s collaboration with the AU and leverage WFP’s country, regional and global data, evidence, case studies, and experts in our engagement with the AU and its Commissioners, AUC departments and Donors.
- Contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely updates and reports, and support communications activities that enable informed decision making and ensure consistency of information presented to the media and other stakeholders.
Work closely with the technical team to support the Resource Mobilization and Fundraising activities, ensuring alignment with overall communications and WFP strategies. - Generate donor-specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos, and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, to support global and local fund-raising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
- Draft funding proposal and concept notes to diversify funding sources for the AUGO including development partners, foundations, and traditional donor governments.
- Organize resource mobilization events in collaboration with the technical teams
Maintain relations with donors and ensure they are consistently and timely informed on important issues including maintaining effective communications with donors’ focal persons. - Maintain a contact list of journalists and media outlets and support the drafting and dissemination of Press Releases, Media Alerts, Social Media Messages, hashtags, info graphics, and quote graphics about WFP’s work in Africa.
- Perform other duties as required
