Org. Setting and Reporting
 
 
 
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON staff support programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The position heads the UN Joint Medical Service (UNJMS) which is part of the Human Resources Management Service (HRMS) of UNON. UNJMS is an occupational health unit and is responsible for medical clearances for new appointments, travel clearances including vaccination and issues of occupational health.
 
 
 
Responsibilities
 
 
 
The position reports, through the Chief of HRMS, to the Director, Division of Administrative Services. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Clinical Duties: (a) Managing and undertaking day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies, pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, immunizations, etc. (b) Referring staff to outside specialists as necessary. (c) Following-up with outside specialists. (d) Overseeing and providing health education and health promotion programmes. (e) Organizing/participating in addressing work environment and occupational health issues. 2. Medico Administrative Duties: (a) Advising Administration and United Nations Member States on United Nations medical standards. (b) Assisting Administration in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission. (c) Advising Administration on medical clearances (fitness for work), sick leave, medical evacuations/repatriations, eligibility to disability benefit, service incurred compensation claims and medical insurance claims. (d) Planning, managing and organizing the medical activities and administrative functions of UNJMS. (e) Participating in the drafting of various Personnel Directives, Medical Standards for recruitment, guidelines established for managing UN field dispensaries and providing medical support to peacekeeping missions, as applicable. 3. Supervisory Administration: (a) Supervising laboratory technicians and nurses; ensuring availability of drugs and medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment. (b) Ensuring appropriate training programmes are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR). 4. Perform other related duties as required.

Education
 
 
 
Doctorate (MD) or equivalent in medicine, including residency/internship in one of the medical specialities, preferably internal medicine. Formal training in CPR and, preferably in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care desirable.
 
 
 
Work Experience
 
 
 
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine. Extensive hands-on experience in dealing with medical equipment and pharmaceuticals is desirable. Experience in providing medical support in United Nations missions or international field missions is desirable.
 
 
 
Languages
 
 
 
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
 
 
 
Assessment Method
 
 
 
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

This position is vacant due to the regular incumbent proceeding on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP). The selection and extension of appointment of the selected candidate will be contingent on the return of the incumbent who maintains a lien against this post. If the selected candidate is an internal staff member of the UN Secretariat, the selection will be recorded as a temporary assignment.  Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
